Souda Bay War Cemetery is a meticulously maintained Commonwealth burial ground located on a peaceful peninsula overlooking Souda Bay. It contains the graves of over 1,500 servicemen, mostly British, Australian, and New Zealand soldiers who fell during the Battle of Crete in 1941. Visitors can walk among the uniform white headstones, each inscribed with the soldier's name, rank, and regiment, set against a backdrop of cypress trees and the sea. The cemetery also includes a memorial to those with no known grave. It offers a solemn, reflective experience and a tangible connection to the island's wartime history.
Don't miss
- Rows of white marble headstones with engraved details of fallen soldiers.
- The Cross of Sacrifice and Stone of Remembrance, standard Commonwealth war cemetery features.
- Panoramic views of Souda Bay and the surrounding hills from the cemetery grounds.
