A bit of history

Münchner Freiheit was originally a field outside the city gates. In the 19th century, it became a parade ground and later a square. It was renamed in 1946 to commemorate the city's liberation from Nazi rule. The square was redesigned in the 1970s with the addition of the fountain and traffic improvements.
