Marienplatz

Marienplatz has been the heart of Munich since the Middle Ages. The square is dominated by the neo-Gothic New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), whose intricate facade and towering spire draw the eye. Every day at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. (and 5 p.m. from March to October), the Glockenspiel in the tower reenacts historical scenes with life-sized figures, accompanied by chimes. The square is also flanked by the Old Town Hall and the Mariensäule, a Marian column erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. Visitors can climb the tower of the New Town Hall for panoramic views of the city and the Alps. The square buzzes with street performers, market stalls, and cafés, making it a lively starting point for exploring Munich's historic center.
