Berlin Wall Memorial

The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße commemorates the division of Berlin by the Berlin Wall and the deaths that occurred there. It includes a 60-metre section of the former border, a Chapel of Reconciliation, a Documentation Centre with a five-story observation tower, a window of remembrance, and a visitor center.

Getting there

Know before you go

• The memorial extends along Bernauer Straße at the corner of Ackerstraße.
• The 60-metre wall section is not accessible to visitors; both ends are closed by stainless steel.
• Pavement markers along the former wall route show its location throughout Berlin.

A bit of history

The memorial was created in 1998 by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal State of Berlin. The idea was suggested by the Deutsches Historisches Museum, and architects Kohlhoff & Kohlhoff were commissioned to design it. The Chapel of Reconciliation stands on the site of the former Versöhnungskirche, which was destroyed in 1985 because it was inside the border strip.
