The Walfisch, or 'Whale', is one of Wismar's most iconic landmarks, easily spotted by its unique roof that resembles the back of a whale. Located in the heart of the Old Town, this Gothic brick building dates back to the 16th century and originally served as a guild house for cloth makers. Today, it functions as a cultural center hosting concerts, exhibitions, and events. Visitors can admire the stepped gable facade adorned with a whale-shaped finial, a whimsical touch that gives the building its name. Inside, the vaulted halls retain their historic charm, offering a glimpse into Wismar's Hanseatic past. The surrounding market square, with its Wasserkunst fountain and brick Gothic architecture, completes the experience.
