Dorf Mecklenburg is a small village that holds the ruins of the original Mecklenburg Castle, the ancestral seat of the House of Mecklenburg, which gave its name to the entire region. The castle, first mentioned in the 10th century, was a Slavic fortress before being expanded by German nobles. Today, visitors can explore the castle mound (Burgwall) with remnants of the fortifications, offering panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. The village itself features charming half-timbered houses and a museum housed in a historic barn, displaying artifacts from the castle's history and local rural life. The site is less crowded than Wismar's Old Town, providing a tranquil journey into medieval times.
