St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) is the largest and most impressive of Wismar's three main Gothic churches. Built of red brick in the 14th–15th centuries, it dominates the skyline with its 130-meter spire. Inside, the hall church design creates a vast, light-filled space with star vaults and slender columns. Highlights include the high altar (c. 1500), a Baroque pulpit, and a bronze baptismal font. The church survived WWII damage and later restoration. Its acoustics are superb, and it often hosts concerts. Climbing the tower (if open) rewards you with panoramic views over the old town and harbor.
