Porta Nigra, meaning 'Black Gate,' is a colossal Roman city gate that has stood for nearly 1,800 years, making it the most iconic landmark in Trier. Built from massive grey sandstone blocks without mortar (held together by iron clamps), its dark color comes from centuries of weathering. The gate was originally part of the Roman city wall and served as a defensive structure. In the Middle Ages, it was repurposed as a church, which ironically saved it from demolition. Today, visitors can explore the gate's multiple levels, including the upper floors that offer panoramic views of Trier. The interior rooms contain exhibits on Roman engineering and the gate's history. Walking through the two passageways, you can imagine the chariots and pedestrians that once passed through. Porta Nigra is a must-see for anyone interested in Roman history and architecture.

Don't miss

  • Climbing to the upper floors for views over Trier's rooftops
  • The original Roman stonework and iron clamps
  • The exhibition on Roman building techniques
  • The preserved medieval church additions (apse and columns)
  • The two arched passageways, still used by pedestrians
