Tegernsee Abbey, or Kloster Tegernsee, dominates the town center with its imposing baroque facade. Founded in the 8th century, the abbey was a Benedictine monastery until its secularization in 1803. Today, the complex houses a brewery (Brauhaus Tegernsee), a restaurant, and event spaces. The abbey church, now the parish church of St. Quirinus, features ornate stucco work, frescoes, and a high altar by sculptor Andreas Faistenberger. Visitors can explore the church for free, then tour the brewery (book in advance) to sample the famous Tegernsee beer. The cloister and former monastic buildings now host concerts, exhibitions, and a hotel. The abbey's location on the lakefront offers a picturesque setting, with a beer garden that is a local favorite.
