Baumgartenschneid, at 1,448 meters, is one of the highest peaks directly overlooking Lake Tegernsee. The mountain is a favorite among local hikers for its relatively straightforward ascent and the breathtaking panorama that rewards those who reach the top. The most popular route starts from the Wallberg cable car's middle station or from the town of Rottach-Egern, winding through mixed forest and open alpine pastures. The final stretch climbs over rocky terrain to the summit cross, where you can see the entire Tegernsee valley spread out below, with the lake glinting in the distance and the peaks of the Bavarian Alps stretching to the horizon. Unlike the more developed Wallberg, Baumgartenschneid feels wilder and less crowded, offering a true mountain experience. There is no summit restaurant, so hikers should bring their own food and water. The descent can be extended via a loop trail that passes the scenic Setzberg, making for a full day of exploration.

Don't miss

  • Summit cross with panoramic views of the Tegernsee valley
