St. James's Church (St. Jakobskirche) is a magnificent Gothic hall church that dominates Rothenburg's skyline. Built between 1311 and 1485, it is one of the most important churches in Franconia. The church's interior is a marvel of medieval architecture, with soaring vaulted ceilings, intricate stained glass, and a serene atmosphere. The undisputed highlight is the Holy Blood Altarpiece, carved by the renowned sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider between 1499 and 1505. This exquisite altarpiece, made from limewood, depicts the Last Supper, the Entry into Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives, with a central crystal reliquary said to contain a drop of Christ's blood. The church also features a second Riemenschneider altarpiece, the Twelve Apostles Altar, and a magnificent organ. Visitors can attend services or simply admire the artistry and spirituality of this historic site.
