Buise was once a separate island east of Norderney but gradually merged due to natural sedimentation and dune formation. Today, it is part of the Norderney dune belt, a protected area within the Wadden Sea National Park. The landscape is characterized by shifting dunes, heathland, and salt marshes. It is a haven for birdlife, including oystercatchers and terns. Visitors can hike on marked trails, but access is restricted in some areas to protect nesting birds. The experience is wild and remote, offering a stark contrast to the built-up resort. The area is also important for coastal defense, stabilizing the island's eastern shore.
