The Angel of Peace (Friedensengel) is a prominent landmark on Mannheim's central parade square (Paradeplatz), standing atop a 25-meter-high sandstone column. The gilded bronze angel, created by sculptor Karl Friedrich Moest, holds a laurel wreath and an olive branch, embodying the theme of peace. The monument was erected in 1872 to commemorate the end of the Franco-Prussian War and the founding of the German Empire. The column is decorated with reliefs depicting scenes of war and peace, and the base features four allegorical figures representing the virtues of wisdom, justice, strength, and moderation. The square itself is a bustling hub with fountains, cafes, and shops, making the angel a popular meeting point. At night, the statue is illuminated, creating a striking silhouette against the sky. The Angel of Peace survived both World Wars and was restored after damage, serving as a reminder of Mannheim's resilience. It is one of the city's most photographed landmarks.
