Reichenau Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, lies in Lake Constance just west of Konstanz. It is renowned for its three Romanesque churches: St. George's, St. Peter and Paul's, and the Minster of St. Mary and St. Mark. The island was a major Benedictine monastery center in the Middle Ages, famous for its illuminated manuscripts. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved church interiors, which feature stunning frescoes, including the famous 10th-century 'Miracles of Christ' cycle in St. George's. The island is also a haven for cyclists and hikers, with flat paths through farmland and vineyards. The atmosphere is peaceful, with small villages, a lakeside promenade, and local produce stands. The monastery's herb garden, recreated from medieval plans, offers insight into monastic life. Reichenau's quiet charm contrasts with the busier Mainau, making it ideal for history buffs and those seeking tranquility.
