The Church of Saint George, located on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance, is a masterpiece of early medieval art and architecture. As part of the Reichenau monastic complex, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The church's most remarkable feature is its cycle of Ottonian frescoes, dating from around 1000 AD, which depict scenes from the life of Christ and are among the oldest surviving monumental wall paintings in Germany. The interior is simple yet awe-inspiring, with the frescoes covering the nave and choir. Visitors can also see the crypt and the altar. The church is still used for worship, adding a living dimension to its historical significance. The island itself is a peaceful haven, with walking trails through vineyards and along the lake, making a visit to the church a highlight of any trip to the region.
