Schloss Neuschwanstein is the quintessential fairy-tale castle, perched on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869, the castle was designed as a personal retreat and homage to the operas of Richard Wagner. Its soaring towers, pointed turrets, and dramatic setting against the Alps make it one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Inside, the lavish interiors are a mix of Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic styles, with murals depicting scenes from Wagner's works. The Throne Hall, with its mosaic floor and grand chandelier, is a highlight, though the throne itself was never completed. The castle was still under construction when Ludwig died in 1886, and only 14 rooms were finished. Visitors tour these rooms on a guided walk, learning about Ludwig's eccentric life and tragic end. The views from the castle's windows and the nearby Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) are breathtaking, overlooking the Alpsee and the plains of Bavaria. Despite the crowds, a visit to Neuschwanstein is an unforgettable step into a world of romantic fantasy.
