Cologne Cathedral, or Kölner Dom, is a towering Gothic cathedral that dominates the city's skyline. As the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, it is a working church and a symbol of faith. Visitors are awed by its immense scale, intricate stonework, and the breathtaking interior with soaring vaulted ceilings. The cathedral houses the Shrine of the Three Kings, a golden reliquary said to contain the bones of the Magi. Climbing the 533 steps to the south tower rewards you with panoramic views of Cologne and the Rhine River. The colorful stained-glass windows, including the modern 'Richter Window' with over 11,000 squares of glass, are a highlight. The cathedral's blackened exterior, due to centuries of pollution, adds to its dramatic presence.
