Königssee is a stunning alpine lake located in the Berchtesgaden National Park, known for its crystal-clear emerald waters and dramatic mountain backdrop. Visitors typically start at the town of Schönau am Königssee, where electric boats depart for a serene journey across the lake. The boat ride includes a stop at the iconic St. Bartholomä pilgrimage church with its distinctive red domes, accessible only by boat or on foot. The lake is surrounded by steep cliffs and forests, offering numerous hiking trails that range from easy lakeside walks to challenging climbs up to peaks like Jenner or Watzmann. The water is exceptionally clean, and swimming is allowed in designated areas. The echo effect at the Echo Wall is a unique acoustic phenomenon where a trumpet fanfare is played and echoed back across the water. The area is also a haven for wildlife, including eagles and marmots.
