The Fuggerei is a unique neighborhood in Augsburg, founded in 1521 by the wealthy Fugger family as a social housing project for needy Catholic citizens. Today, it remains a vibrant residential area, with 67 houses and 140 apartments. Visitors can walk through the quiet, cobblestone streets, admire the uniform architecture with its distinctive green shutters, and visit the museum in one of the original apartments, which shows how residents lived in the 16th century. The complex also includes a small chapel and a bunker from World War II. What makes the Fuggerei special is that it is still run as a charitable foundation, with annual rent set at just one Rhenish guilder (about €0.88) plus three daily prayers. It's a living piece of history, offering a glimpse into early social welfare.
