Abuko Nature Reserve is Gambia's first protected area, covering 105 hectares of gallery forest and savannah. A single, well-defined trail loops through the reserve, following the Lamin Stream and passing a small pool where crocodiles and turtles bask. Wildlife is abundant: green monkeys, red colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and monitor lizards are commonly seen. The reserve is a premier birding destination, with species like the blue-breasted kingfisher and African paradise flycatcher. A small museum at the entrance displays local flora and fauna.

Don't miss

  • Hike the nature trail and spot monkeys, crocodiles, and bushbuck
  • Birdwatch for over 270 species, including kingfishers and flycatchers
  • Visit the small natural history museum near the entrance
