The Musée de la Romanité is a contemporary archaeological museum in Nîmes, directly opposite the Arena of Nîmes. Opened in 2018, its innovative glass-and-steel facade, designed by Elizabeth de Portzamparc, creates a visual dialogue with the ancient amphitheater. Inside, the museum houses Nîmes' extensive Roman collections, including mosaics, sculptures, inscriptions, and everyday objects spanning from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. Interactive displays and multimedia presentations bring the history of Roman Gaul to life. Highlights include a stunning mosaic of the god Oceanus, a reconstructed Roman garden, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the arena. The museum offers a comprehensive understanding of how Roman civilization shaped the region, making it an essential complement to a visit to the arena.
