Fort Saint-Jean is a historic fortress built in the 17th century on a rocky promontory at the entrance to Marseille's Old Port. It was constructed to defend the city and later served as a prison and military depot. Today, it is part of the MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) complex, connected by two footbridges. Visitors can explore the fort's ramparts, towers, and gardens, and enjoy panoramic views of the port, the Mediterranean, and the modern MuCEM building. The site also houses temporary exhibitions and a restaurant. The fort's layered history is visible in its architecture, from medieval foundations to 20th-century additions.

Don't miss

  • Walking the ramparts for views of the Old Port and sea
  • The Jardin des Migrations (Garden of Migrations) on the fort's terrace
  • The footbridges connecting to the MuCEM and the Panier district
  • The Tour du Fanal, a medieval tower within the fort
  • Temporary exhibitions in the fort's galleries
