Cathédrale La Major, officially the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure, is a monumental cathedral located in the Joliette district near the Old Port. Its most distinctive feature is the alternating green stone from Florence and white limestone from Cassis, creating a striking striped exterior. Built in the 19th century in a Neo-Byzantine style, it is one of the largest cathedrals in France. Inside, visitors are greeted by soaring domes, marble columns, and intricate mosaics. The cathedral's size and ornate decoration reflect Marseille's status as a major Mediterranean port. The adjacent older cathedral (Vieille Major) dates from the 12th century and offers a contrast in scale and style.
