Place des Terreaux is the vibrant heart of Lyon's Presqu'île district, a grand square that has been a focal point of city life for centuries. Dominating the square is the magnificent Bartholdi Fountain, created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty. The fountain depicts four horses pulling a chariot, symbolizing the rivers of France. On the square's north side stands the imposing Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), a 17th-century masterpiece with a striking façade and a clock tower. To the east, the Palais Saint-Pierre houses the Museum of Fine Arts, one of France's largest art museums. The square itself is paved with large stone slabs and often hosts events, markets, and gatherings. At night, the fountain is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. Visitors can sit at one of the many café terraces lining the square and soak in the lively ambiance. The square also features 69 small granite bollards, installed in 1994 as part of a redesign by artist Daniel Buren, adding a contemporary touch to the historic setting.
