Perched on the hill overlooking the Saône River, La Croix-Rousse offers a distinct contrast to the city below. Its nickname, 'the hill that works,' reflects its legacy as the center of Lyon's silk industry. Today, the neighborhood buzzes with a creative energy, blending artisan workshops, independent boutiques, and lively cafés. The narrow, winding streets are punctuated by hidden traboules, covered passageways that once allowed silk workers to transport fabric without exposure to the elements. Visitors can explore these secret corridors, many of which connect courtyards and stairways, offering a glimpse into the area's industrial past. The sprawling Croix-Rousse market, held daily except Monday, is a feast for the senses, with local produce, cheeses, and flowers. The neighborhood also boasts panoramic views of Lyon from its belvederes, such as the Esplanade du Gros Caillou, where a giant stone marks the site of a former Roman amphitheater.
