The Archaeological Site of Olbia is a fascinating ancient Greek settlement founded around the 4th century BC on the eastern shore of the Giens Peninsula. This well-preserved site offers a tangible connection to Hyères' distant past, when Greek colonists from Massalia (modern Marseille) established a fortified trading post. Visitors can wander through the excavated remains of the city, including the grid-like street plan, foundations of houses, public buildings, and remarkably intact thermal baths with their heating system (hypocaust) still visible. The site is set in a tranquil, pine-shaded area near the sea, with informative signs in French and English that explain the layout and daily life of the inhabitants. A small on-site museum displays artifacts such as pottery, coins, and tools uncovered during excavations. Olbia is less crowded than many other archaeological sites in Provence, offering a peaceful and educational experience for history enthusiasts.
