The Véroncle Gorges, located just a short drive from Gordes, offer a striking natural landscape carved by the Véroncle River. This narrow canyon features towering limestone cliffs, lush vegetation, and a series of historic water mills that once harnessed the river's power for olive oil production and grain grinding. A well-marked hiking trail follows the gorge, passing by the ruins of these mills, including the Moulin de la Bouva and Moulin de l'Étang. The path is moderately challenging, with some rocky sections and stream crossings, but rewards hikers with cool shade, the sound of rushing water, and glimpses of wildlife like kingfishers and dragonflies. The gorge is particularly beautiful in spring when wildflowers bloom and the water flow is strong. It's a peaceful escape from the hilltop villages, offering a tangible connection to the region's industrial past.
