Perched at the highest point of Gordes, the Château de Gordes is a striking blend of medieval fortification and Renaissance elegance. Originally built as a fortress in the 11th century, it was rebuilt in the 16th century as a residence for the powerful de Simiane family. The castle's massive stone walls, crenellations, and round towers evoke its defensive past, while the interior features grand fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, and a monumental staircase. Today, the château houses the Musée Pol Mara, a collection of works by the Belgian artist, and hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. Visitors can explore the furnished rooms, climb the towers for panoramic views over the Luberon valley, and stroll through the small courtyard. The castle is a focal point of the village, with narrow streets and stone houses cascading down the hillside below.
