The Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) is the largest glacier in France, stretching 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) through the Mont Blanc massif. Accessible via the Montenvers Railway, a historic cogwheel train that has been running since 1908, the journey from Chamonix takes about 20 minutes and offers spectacular views of the Aiguilles de Chamonix and the valley below. At the top, you'll find a viewing platform overlooking the glacier, which has receded significantly over the years. A highlight is the ice cave (Grotte de Glace), a tunnel carved into the glacier each year, where you can walk through blue-tinged ice and see sculptures. The site also includes a museum about the glacier and the railway, a restaurant, and a small chapel. The descent to the ice cave involves a cable car and a staircase (about 400 steps), but the effort is rewarded with an up-close encounter with the glacier. This is a classic Chamonix experience that combines natural wonder with a touch of history.
