The Château de Caen is a formidable medieval fortress that dominates the city center. Built around 1060 by William the Conqueror, it is one of the largest medieval enclosures in Europe. The castle's massive ramparts and gatehouses offer a glimpse into Norman power, while the site now serves as a cultural hub. Within its walls, you'll find the Normandy Museum (Musée de Normandie), which explores the region's history from prehistory to the present, and the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts), housing an impressive collection of paintings, drawings, and sculptures from the 16th to 20th centuries. The castle grounds also include a medieval garden, a former ducal palace (the Salle de l'Échiquier), and panoramic views of Caen from the ramparts.
