The Abbaye aux Dames, also known as the Women's Abbey or Abbey of the Holy Trinity, stands as a serene testament to Norman religious architecture and royal patronage. Founded in the 11th century by Matilda of Flanders, wife of William the Conqueror, this abbey was built as a counterpart to the men's abbey (Abbaye aux Hommes) founded by William himself. Visitors today can explore the elegant Romanesque church, with its harmonious proportions and peaceful cloister. The abbey church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, features a distinctive lantern tower and a crypt where Matilda's tomb lies. The site now also houses the regional council offices, but the religious and historical core remains open to the public. Walking through the abbey, you'll feel the quiet dignity of a place that has been a center of worship and learning for nearly a millennium.
