The Avignon City Walls, or Remparts d'Avignon, are a remarkable example of medieval military architecture, stretching nearly 4.3 kilometers around the old town. Built in the 14th century under Pope Innocent VI, these ramparts were designed to protect the papal seat during the Avignon Papacy. Today, they stand as a testament to the city's rich history, with their imposing stone towers and crenellations. Visitors can walk along parts of the walls, enjoying panoramic views of the Rhône River and the city's rooftops. The walls are punctuated by several gates, such as the Porte de la République, which lead into the bustling streets of the historic center. The ramparts are particularly striking when illuminated at night, creating a dramatic backdrop for evening strolls.
