Avignon Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms)

Avignon Cathedral, officially Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms, is a Romanesque church built in the 12th century, adjacent to the Palais des Papes. Its most striking feature is the gilded statue of the Virgin Mary atop the bell tower, which glints in the sun. Inside, the cathedral is relatively simple compared to the lavish palace next door, but it houses a beautiful 14th-century Gothic throne and several tombs of popes. The atmosphere is serene, offering a quiet respite from the crowds. The cathedral is still an active place of worship, so visitors should be respectful.
