Perched on a rocky outcrop above the Maine River, Château d'Angers is a striking example of medieval military architecture. Its massive black-and-white striped schist and limestone walls enclose a sprawling complex that once served as the seat of the powerful Dukes of Anjou. Visitors enter via a drawbridge and walk through the 17 towers, each offering panoramic views of the city and river. The castle's most celebrated treasure is the Apocalypse Tapestry, a 14th-century masterpiece depicting the Book of Revelation in vivid detail. Inside the moat, formal gardens provide a peaceful contrast to the fortress's stern exterior. The site also houses a small museum with artifacts from the castle's history. A visit here immerses you in the turbulent politics and artistry of medieval France, with the tapestry alone worth the trip.
