The National Museum of Ethiopia is the country's foremost repository of archaeological and cultural treasures. Its most famous exhibit is the partial skeleton of Australopithecus afarensis, known as Lucy (Dinkinesh), discovered in 1974. Beyond Lucy, the museum displays ancient Aksumite coins, traditional musical instruments, and a rich array of Orthodox religious art, including processional crosses and icons. The upper floors feature contemporary Ethiopian paintings and ethnographic objects. A visit here provides a sweeping overview of Ethiopia's long human history.

Don't miss

  • View the original Lucy skeleton (cast) and learn about her significance in human evolution.
  • Examine the intricate processional crosses from the Aksumite and Gondarine periods.
  • See the collection of imperial regalia and thrones from Ethiopia's Solomonic dynasty.
