Ivangorod is a small Russian town directly opposite Narva, separated only by the Narva River and a border crossing. Its centerpiece is the Ivangorod Fortress, a 15th-century castle built by Ivan III to defend against the Livonian Order. The fortress's massive red-brick walls and towers rise dramatically from the riverbank, offering a stark contrast to Narva's Hermann Castle on the Estonian side. Visitors can cross the border (with a valid visa) to explore the fortress interior, which houses a small museum, and walk along the ramparts for panoramic views of both towns. The town itself is modest, with Soviet-era apartment blocks and a quiet atmosphere, making the fortress the main draw.
Don't miss
