Luxor Temple, on the east bank of the Nile, was built primarily by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II. Unlike other temples, it is not dedicated to a god but was a center for the Opet Festival, celebrating the pharaoh's divine power. Visitors enter through a massive pylon flanked by Ramesses II's statues and obelisks, then walk into a courtyard with papyrus-shaped columns. The temple is beautifully lit after sunset, making it a magical evening visit.
Don't miss
- Walk through the Avenue of Sphinxes, a 2.7 km processional way connecting Luxor Temple to Karnak.
- See the colossal statues of Ramesses II at the entrance pylon.
- Visit the Roman-era chapel inside the temple, built over earlier pharaonic structures.
