Deir el-Medina is the remarkably preserved village of the workers who constructed the tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. The site includes narrow streets, stone houses, and communal spaces, giving a rare glimpse into the lives of non-royal Egyptians. The workers' tombs nearby are decorated with vibrant scenes of daily life and religious beliefs. The village's isolation and the wealth of surviving papyri have made it a key source for understanding ancient Egyptian society.

Don't miss

  • Walk through the excavated village streets and see the foundations of workers' houses.
  • Visit the tomb of Sennedjem (TT1) for its beautifully painted burial chamber.
  • See the Ptolemaic temple of Hathor at the site, built later over the village.
