Plaza de España (Santo Domingo)

Plaza de España, also called Plaza de la Hispanidad, is a large public square in the Ciudad Colonial district of Santo Domingo. It is a popular gathering spot surrounded by restaurants and outdoor terraces, and often hosts concerts and festivals. To the north stands the Alcázar de Colón (1514), the country's most visited museum; to the south is the Museo de las Casas Reales (1511). The Ozama River lies to the east.

A bit of history

Built in the early 16th century, the plaza was the commercial and social hub for the first Spanish families in the city. During the 19th century, several houses were built around it. In 1990, the plaza was remodeled when the Ciudad Colonial was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site; a central fountain was removed as part of the work.
