We were walkin' up Shanghai Lu with sore feet from the miles we walked at other Nanjing attractions, desperate for something to eat after having finally found a bar (whose name I can't remember, but the picture I've added below is of its interior) just east of Shanghai Lu on Guangzhou Lu. We'd turned back towards the station (and its nearby business district filled with shops and restaurants), when my colleague asked, "Do you like sushi?" as we came upon Joy Japan Restaurant. I do, she does, and so we went in. It's cozy inside, with small, intimate, and private booths in front, a middle common room, and a back room (which we didn't see). It caters to the Japanese crowd mostly, or seemed to that night, and serves both beer, wine, and spirits. If you're hanging around, in Asian fashion you can buy a bottle and leave it there for later visits - we shared some of one of the customer's bottles once we chatted with him and ended up drinking together. In general the service was quick and friendly, and eating in the common room means you'll have to talk with anyone who speaks English and nod, smile, and perhaps take pictures with everyone else. We loved it. And made several instant acquaintances. The food, which we got only a smattering of (smallest sashimi selection, a simple tuna roll, and something else I can't remember), was fresh and delicious, the beers were cold, though unlike an American place there was no miso soup included. Not particularly cheap, but quite tasty and certainly very friendly. Two thumbs up.
