Orongo is a stone-built ceremonial village perched on the edge of Rano Kau volcano, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It was the center of the Birdman cult, an annual competition where contestants raced to retrieve the first egg of the sooty tern. The site is dotted with petroglyphs depicting the Birdman and other symbols, and offers breathtaking views of the crater lake and islets. Visitors can walk among the restored houses and imagine the rituals that took place here.
