Motu Iti is one of three islets southwest of Easter Island, near the ceremonial village of Orongo. Though smaller than Motu Nui, it played a role in the Birdman (Tangata Manu) ritual: competitors would swim to Motu Nui, but Motu Iti was also a destination for collecting the first sooty tern egg. Today, the islet is a seabird sanctuary and can be viewed from the Orongo cliffs, offering dramatic ocean scenery. Its rugged, wave-battered appearance adds to the mystique of the ancient competition.
