The Transfiguration Monastery, situated on the cliffs of the Yantra River near Veliko Tarnovo, is one of Bulgaria's largest and most picturesque Orthodox monasteries. Founded in the 14th century, it was rebuilt in the 19th century after Ottoman destruction. The monastery's main church features impressive frescoes by master painter Zahari Zograf, including a striking depiction of the Last Judgment. Visitors can explore the tranquil courtyard, climb to the bell tower for sweeping views of the river and surrounding hills, and learn about the monastery's role in preserving Bulgarian culture during the Ottoman period. The setting, with the river far below, adds to the sense of peace and isolation.

Don't miss

  • View Zahari Zograf's frescoes in the main church, especially the dramatic Last Judgment scene.
  • Climb the bell tower for panoramic views of the Yantra River gorge.
