The Belfry of Ghent stands tall in the city center, a proud medieval bell tower that once guarded the city's privileges and served as a watchtower. Climbing its narrow stairs rewards you with sweeping views over Ghent's historic rooftops, spires, and canals. The tower houses a carillon with 54 bells, and you can see the Great Bell, called 'Roland,' which was traditionally rung to mark important events. Inside, the Belfry Museum displays the original city keys and a dragon-shaped weather vane. The structure is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the adjacent Cloth Hall and the Mammelokker building.
