Naschmarkt

The Naschmarkt is a popular fruit and vegetable market in Vienna, stretching about 1.5 kilometers along the Wienzeile over the Wien River. You can buy fresh produce from around the world, exotic herbs, cheese, baked goods, meats, and seafood, and there are many small restaurants offering sushi, kebab, seafood, and traditional Viennese dishes like Kaiserschmarrn or Palatschinken. The market also has stalls selling clothes and accessories, and its atmosphere attracts large numbers of tourists every year.

Getting there

Know before you go

• The lower end of the market (farther from Karlsplatz or the city centre) is cheaper than the upper end (closer to Karlsplatz).
• The right lane (facing away from the city centre) is reserved for mostly sit-down eateries.

A bit of history

The market has existed since the 16th century as the Aschenmarkt. In 1780, it was moved to the top of present-day Wiedner Hauptstraße. The name may come from milk sold in buckets called 'Asch' (made of ash trees), or from the site being a former landfill for ash and waste. From 1793, all fruits and vegetables brought to Vienna by cart had to be sold there. The first pavilions over the Wien River were built in 1902.
