Burggarten

The Burggarten is a public park in Vienna's Innere Stadt district. Originally a private garden for Emperor Francis I, it was built after Napoleon's troops destroyed the city's fortifications. Today, visitors can see the Palmenhaus greenhouse, a butterfly house, and several statues, including one of Mozart.

A bit of history
After French troops destroyed the Burgbastei bastion in 1809, the area was redesigned as a private garden for Francis I, who loved botany. Court architect Ludwig Gabriel von Remy designed it, and court gardener Franz Antoine the Elder built it. Completed in 1820, the park was connected to the Hofburg by an underground passage. It was nationalized and opened to the public in 1918. In 2021, a small section became paddocks for the Spanish Riding School's Lipizzaner horses.
