The Tennen Mountains (Tennengebirge) are a rugged limestone massif in the Austrian Alps, located south of Salzburg. Known for their stark white peaks, deep gorges, and high plateaus, they offer some of the best hiking and climbing in the region. The range is part of the Northern Limestone Alps and features numerous trails for all levels, from gentle walks to challenging via ferratas. A popular starting point is the village of Werfen, where the Eisriesenwelt ice cave is also located. The Tennen Mountains are distinctive for their karst landscape, with sinkholes, caves, and alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. Hikers can traverse the high plateau, the Tennengebirge plateau, which sits at around 2,000 meters and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Climbers are drawn to the sheer rock faces of the Bischofsmütze and other summits. The area is also home to ibex, chamois, and marmots.
