Tucked away in Linz's old town, the Old Cathedral (Alter Dom) is a beautiful Baroque church that served as the city's main cathedral until the New Cathedral was built. Originally a Jesuit church, it was constructed between 1669 and 1678 and later became the seat of the Bishop of Linz. The exterior is relatively understated, but the interior is a dazzling display of Baroque artistry: gilded stucco, frescoed ceilings, marble altars, and a magnificent pulpit. The dome, painted with scenes from the life of St. Ignatius, is a highlight, as is the high altar with its painting of the Assumption of Mary. The church has excellent acoustics and often hosts classical concerts. Its intimate scale makes it feel more personal than the grand New Cathedral, and the quiet side chapels invite contemplation. The crypt contains the tombs of several bishops.

Don't miss

  • The frescoed dome depicting the glory of St. Ignatius
  • The ornate high altar with its dramatic painting
  • The Baroque pulpit adorned with intricate carvings
  • The side chapels with their gilded altars and statues
  • The crypt with bishops' tombs (occasionally open to visitors)
