Dürnstein Castle is a ruined medieval fortress that dramatically crowns a rocky hill above the town of Dürnstein in the Wachau Valley. It is famously known as the place where King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192 after being captured by Duke Leopold V of Austria. Today, visitors can hike up to the castle ruins for a rewarding experience: the steep climb (about 20 minutes from the town) leads through vineyards and forest paths, culminating in panoramic views of the Danube River, the terraced vineyards, and the surrounding valley. The ruins themselves consist of a keep and sections of walls, with interpretive panels detailing the castle's history. The site is especially beautiful at sunset when the golden light illuminates the valley. While little remains of the original structure, the atmosphere and vistas make it a must-visit for history buffs and hikers.
