Burgruine Senftenberg is the atmospheric remnant of a 12th-century castle, dramatically situated on a rocky outcrop above the village of Senftenberg. The ruins consist of a tall keep, sections of wall, and a chapel foundation. Visitors can climb the keep for sweeping views of the Danube River and the terraced vineyards of the Wachau Valley. The site is surrounded by forest, making it a peaceful hike. The castle played a role in regional conflicts and was abandoned in the 17th century. Today, it's a popular destination for hikers and history buffs. The path up is steep but rewarding, and the ruins are free to explore. Bring sturdy shoes and a camera.
